Photo This pub opened on Monday 25th May 1959 and was built by Thornley Kelsey of Radford Semele, their only pub in Coventry. The license was transferred from the Hope and Anchor in Sherbourne Street, which was damaged in the Blitz. The name came from the fact that the pub was built opposite Ten Shilling Wood. The sovereign was Britain's standard gold coin from 1817 to 1917, with a value of one pound, i.e. twenty shillings. On Thornleys being taken over by Davenports it became a Davenports pub, with a very comprehensive off licence occupying part of the site. By 2008 it had been renamed the SOVEREIGN.
