In 1779 whilst investigating the murder of John Newbold, Alderman Hewitt learnt that some suspects had been drinking in the Nags Head by the canal basin.A 'nag' is a small riding horse or pony, and early pub signs showing a nag's head probably indicated that one could be hired from the inn. | |||
