| In 1838 a house in Tower Street was for sale, which had been converted "at very considerable outlay" into a public house called the White Lion.
By May 1841 the pub had been renamed the Hope and Anchor. This is a heraldic reference to Edward IV, or the Earls of March or Duke of Norfolk. | |||
