Since around 1845 this had been the WELCH HARP (from 1850 usually using the modern spelling, WELSH HARP). However, from 1886 the pub's proximity to the Market Hall prompted another name, and directories from this time until closure used the name MARKET VAULTS, while the newspapers tended to use either name in their reports. In 1901 Allard Motorcycles was taken over by the Birmingham Motor Manufacturing Co., who created a new enterprise called the Rex Motor Manufacturing Co. in larger works on Osborne Road. Frederick Allard enjoyed a new career as licensee of the Market Vaults / Welsh Harp. In 1910 it was advertising 'home brewed ales'. On 25th December 1925 this pub closed after payment of compensation. At the time of closure it was owned by Phipps of Northampton.
